Character: Elize Lutus
Series: Tales of Xillia 2
Age: 13
History: I've gotta get stronger!
Whilst that covers the events of Xillia, it doesn't cover what happens prior to it nor any of the event leading up to/taking place in the sequel. Prior to Xillia, Elize was raised in the snow-covered mountains of Auj Oule, south of the capital Kanbalar, with her two parents. She was named for the princessia flower, which they also then planted in their garden. Sometime later, her parents were killed by bandits - or this was what Elize was told - but it transpires Jiao was the one who killed them. Whether it was accidental or not is unknown, but he seems to have felt some guilt over this, as he took it upon himself. Elize was then taken to the Labari Hollow, near to Xian Du, where she became part of an early spyrite experiment. Elize and Teepo quickly bonded, and the results were promising.
Once they had the data they needed, Elize was moved by Jiao to the village of Hamil. The village owed him a favour due to a forgiven debt, and they took Elize in. However, over time, the villagers began to see Elize as a liability and treated her with scorn. She is the outsider and they perceived her as the source of their troubles, because her magic use is unnatural. In their mounting anger, they were also seen to throw rocks at her. Elize was eventually shunned by the villagers and locked away in a storage shed, but always managed to find her way out.
At the end of Xillia, Elize seals Teepo's power, finally feeling confident enough in herself to no longer need him by her side, nor have him speak for her – in a way, Elize lets go of her long time security blanket, and even though he's not alive and she'll readily admit that now, she still treasures him. It's not until when she heads to Elympios with the rest of her class as Goodwill Ambassadors that she brings Teepo "back to life", and even then, it's only so she and her friends can show each other their dolls on the trip (as it happens, Teepo stays reactivated, as Elize ends up joining her friends (and Ludger) once more, due to a fractured dimension they found themselves in, which she too wants answers for). Teepo is still his familiar old self, and with the threat and the need to fight monsters and the like, it's important for her to keep him around due to having to use spirit artes so frequently, since he amplifies their use for her, as always. It'll be the same in the Havens, too – same duo, but the dynamics some may remember will have changed remarkably.
Canon Point: Post Chapter 9, after Gaius and Muzét join the party.
Personality: With a stable home and place to live, the past year has been as much of a journey for Elize as the one she went on with her fellow companions. Where Elize was once shy and nervous, now she speaks her mind without batting an eyelid. Where once she was pursuing friendships, now she has them – those she saved the world with, Driselle, friends from her school and those around Sharilton and even further afield to her pen pals in Elympios. Mostly, now Elize has the experience with being with others, she's definitely come out of her shell. She's a warm sort of person, a kind person, whom others naturally gravitate towards, and Elize will be sure to see that no one feels left out or is left alone. She is insightful and well-learned, and is willing to give everyone a chance. She gives everything, no matter what it is, her all without question. And though her social interactions have changed quite a bit, Elize is still someone who is strong-willed, steadfast, and a little bit stubborn, facets of her personality that remain. Likewise, she has always been kind and warm, never treating others with the same contempt they can give her, but she's had more of an opportunity to show it, as of late.
She doesn't, and hasn't, had Teepo speak for her in a very long time. Where once Teepo did most of the talking for her due to how timid she was, Teepo has been absent from Elize's life for much of the last year. Her reliance on him no longer exists, really, and she's able to stand on her own two feet securely. Now, she's accepted what he is, something she'll readily share with other people and no longer feels upset about. He's still her first treasured friend, even if that illusion of life has long since gone, and she doesn't need him to be around to contribute on her behalf, as she can do that for herself. Still, though he primarily acts as a Booster to enhance her artes, Teepo is still in tune with Elize's thoughts, and still voices them on a regular basis. Since he is echoing, Teepo doesn't really have a filter and is very blunt, direct, and honest. He picks up on any thought, be it a passing one or one well set in her psyche, and it really doesn't matter what it is because he's going to let everybody know; sometimes he'll blow them out of proportion, sometimes he'll pick up on a thought before it's fully formed, and sometimes it's the instinctual, gut reaction and that may also come out as rather rude. If she needs to, Elize will quickly intervene and correct him.
It's not wrong to say Elize is not a kid anymore, which she repeats often. Even though she's only thirteen, and some might say she just thinks that, but her actions aren't that of a child, neither. She's grown a lot mentally, maturing equally so, and now it's not others reaching out to her to cheer her up but her doing so to those around her. She's begun to notice others more, the way children eventually do – being more selfless than self centred, that she's not the only one to have problems to think about and resolve, and she'll gently let you know that she's there should you wish to talk about it, even if she doesn't say it directly. Elize easily slips into the big sister role to Elle, and offers her company and companionship, cheers her up when she's upset, and when Elle talks excitedly about Bunnykins and then declares she doesn't want one, Elize notices the disappointment in Elle's mannerisms, and resolves to find a Bunnykins for her to make her happy.
Elize is a lot more independent than she once was, but that's not to say she won't rely on others when she has to, and has never not known how to ask things of other people, which she holds in high regard. She'll tell others about her problems, if she's worried or concerned. She'll keep any promise she makes. Sharing things with others is still the most important thing – no lying, no keeping secrets. You don't do that with her, and if you do lie or keep a secret, she will be saddened by it, and mildly disappointed at not being trusted enough to have something shared with her, because she could have helped, kept you safe… any number of different things. However, Elize still won't take to liars well overall, if they keep persistantly doing it: but she's less likely to be spiteful and vindictive because she'll know there's more to it than just the act of lying, that there's a story to how the person became the way they are, which is a lesson she learned with Alvin. She does have a big heart, though, and if you give her the reason too, she'll also forgive – though this can take time, and lots of it. Betraying her trust and faith in you is really the only way to make her angry.
Depending on who she's around, another side comes out of Elize, where she can be remarkably sassy and has a well honed wit, but largely, this is reserved for Alvin.
It's safe to say that, after much hardship, Elize has found what she's looking for – family, and friends, and that she's only grown from it. Sure enough, she'll only continue to do so.
Skills and Abilities: Elize is a capable mage, and her spirit artes are dark and healing based. Whilst she has no physical combat ability to speak of (except for Pow Hammer), Teepo is able to assist with his own set of attacks that will damage the enemy, but her offense lies largely with her dark artes. Further, Elize is also able to perform linked artes with those who also possess Allium Orbs – Allium Orbs allow the user to sense and to know what their partner will do intuitively, allowing for a strongly united front as the pair work together - and further, enables her to cast her mystic arte, Scary-Go-Round.
Elize is also acknowledged to be an extremely gifted Spirit Channeler. Though she is young, she has the strongest magical ability of the party, and even with the sequel this has not changed; as with all those resident to Rieze Maxia, in order to do this she has to channel spirits in order to cast spirit artes, and channelling spirits is done by a person's mana lobe. Mastery over channelling comes with time and age, but her mana lobe is far more developed than it should be.
The reason Elize is able to cast with such fluidity is thanks to Teepo. Though at first Elize believed him to just be a doll, it was later revealed to her that Teepo is a device called a Booster, which improves a person's efficiency with spirit artes and greatly enhances their capabilities (the potential for Elize to be this good on her own is there, certainly, but it was brought on at a much younger age thanks to Teepo's assistance). After her parents were killed by bandits, Elize was taken with a bunch of other children by Exodus to be part of further experiments on Boosters, where she and Teepo were the best matched and had the strongest reaction to being paired with each other. It should also be noted that extended use of a Booster drains the life of its user, but Elize has never shown any ill-effects, so it's possible she is immune.
Whilst he can speak - and frequently does - Teepo has no agency of his own and what he does say is only an echo of Elize's innermost thoughts (they can be simply subconscious thoughts, and it's certainly useful for her to think things through even if she already has a vague idea of the answer; at other times, they'll be surface thoughts, and she'll chide him for them, though this is effectively chiding herself too). He can float and he can fly and yes he can seemingly take hold of your entire head in his mouth because he loves you that much and sorry no Elize isn't going to stop him. The only real thing Teepo is able to provide for himself are his functions, and how he uses them. As well as the Teepo prefixed physical abilities, he is able to drain mana from others and restore it to Elize and her friends, which he describes as "draining enthusiasm", and that each person tastes differently.
